Principal's Message

Dear Killybrooke Elementary School Parents,

Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year.  We are starting the school year in Distance Learning and will keep you informed about serving students for in-person instruction when we are able.

At Killybrooke School, we have embraced the “No Excuses University” model, with a culture of universal achievement and exceptional systems to support the achievement of every child. This is a schoolwide commitment that:

  • Every child will be proficient in reading, writing, and math;
  • Every child will be challenged with enriching learning opportunities;
  • Positive social-emotional development and building strong character is important;
  • Teachers use assessment to guide next steps in instruction; and
  • Teachers collaborate to plan and provide instruction to maximize student success.

 We work diligently to incorporate the message that students at Killybrooke are college-bound.  Every classroom has adopted a university and proudly displays its flag to remind the children of the year that their class will graduate from a four-year university.  We start each day with the flag salute and the Killybrooke cheer to reinforce the message that “Killybrooke is College-bound”.  We are very proud of our 1:1 Chromebook program for our 2nd-6th grade students to equip them with technology to research, collaborate, and create.

2019 marks the fifth year in a row that Killybrooke Smarter Balanced Assessment  (SBAC) scores reflect high levels of achievement and sustained growth.   At Killybrooke, we are proud of our diverse and vibrant community of learners.  Our subgroup scores indicate that our student groups are performing at impressive levels when compared to the percentage of students meeting/exceeding standards within the larger systems and geographical regions.  We are proud to be a 2020 California Distinguished School.  The Campaign for Business and Education Excellence has recognized Killybrooke as a high-performing Honor Roll School nine times since 2008.  Our schoolwide systems keep our efforts focused on meeting our achievement goals for all students.   This mindset that our students can and will achieve permeates our programs, actions, and systems.

The social-emotional development of our students is equally as important to us.  Our staff is talented, caring, and dedicated to ensuring that every child succeeds.  Killybrooke is a safe, caring, and positive environment for students.

At Killybrooke, we help all students develop and demonstrate positive character traits (Responsibility, Respect, Patience, Curiosity, Courage, Generosity, Confidence, Fairness, Determination/Grit, and Gratitude) as a way to positively influence their success in school and build habits that will influence their lifelong success as adults.  Our Student Council leads service projects and special schoolwide activities throughout the year to reinforce these concepts and help students see them in action.   Kindness is a year-long focus and students are recognized by Killybrooke staff members throughout the school day for displaying kindness.  Students are also recognized at our weekly flag deck for displaying kindness and the monthly virtue.  In 2019, we were honored with a Silver Medal from the California PBIS Coalition for our Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports system.

 In addition to achieving academic success in core content areas in every classroom, we believe our students should have access to a wide variety of enrichment opportunities to enhance their learning and development.  Our students have many opportunities for enrichment activities during the school day and through after-school programs.  Special enrichment activities during the school day include: Science-related Field Trips, Walk Through History, Innovative Nutrition Education Events, Student Council, and Meet the Masters.  After-school activities include: Pacific Chorale Academy, Ranch Program, Pilot Cup Soccer, Talent Show, and more.  Many of our enrichment activities are made possible through the generosity of our Killybrooke Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) and other community organizations (including Pacific Chorale Academy).

 In close partnership with our active Killybrooke PTA, we host many family involvement events designed to strengthen the bond between school and family through engaging parent-child activities.

 We value communication with you and have set up procedures to ensure that effective communication is ongoing between school and home. If you need to contact me, please call the office at 714-424-7945 and speak with Cindy Ridens, Administrative Assistant. She will be happy to arrange a time for us to speak on the phone. You are also welcome to contact me via e-mail at We realize the importance of maintaining a clear line of communication between school and home and are committed to accomplishing this goal.

 It is going to be an amazing year of learning for every student at Killybrooke.  Thank you for your ongoing support of our school. We hope you will visit often!

Lorie Hoggard, Ed.D.
